From the master of high action comes a classic espionage thriller that changed the way spy novels were written, the first to combine the British tradition of authentic espionage tradecraft with the American tradition of non-stop action.

He visited them in the orphanage. He brought them candy and taught them to love him as a father. He trained them to be assassins. Now he is trying desperately to have them killed. Spanning the globe and decades of CIA history, THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE is a thriller of fierce loyalty and violent betrayal, of murders planned and coolly executed, of revenge bitterly, urgently desired.

“David Morrell is a master of suspense. He wields it like a stiletto—know just where to stick it and how to turn it. If you’re reading Morrell, you’re sitting on the edge of your seat.”
—Michael Connelly

“Imagine a suspense thriller as riveting as The Thirty-Nine Steps or Rogue Male, featuring heroes the equal of Adam Hall’s Quiller, and crackling with more action than The Road Warrior, Dirty Harry, and The Seven Samurai. Sounds too good to be true? Then just read David Morrell’s THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE.”—Washington Post Book World

“Fast-paced, intelligent, exciting and hard-hitting.”
—Nelson DeMille, New York Times bestselling author of The Panther

“David Morrell is, to me, the finest thriller writer living today.”
—Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of The Columbus Affair

The Brotherhood of the Rose An Espionage Thriller Mortalis Book 1 edition by David Morrell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The basic premise of the plot requires a large stretch of credulity on the part of the reader. However it moves along briskly and this does not become a problem. There are lots of good action scenes and a story line that stays exciting to the very end. Some unexpected twists and turns in the plot keeps reader interest high. There are some spots where the hand-wringing slows things down a little, but not to the point of keeping this from being an enjoyable read.
I read David Morrell's Brotherhood of the Rose many years ago and it always stuck in my mind that it was a terrific story and one of my favorite books. I enjoyed it so much the first time, I thought I would re-read it, and I'm so glad I did. It is very suspenseful and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it.
This was probably a great mini-series (which I read it was made into). I wasn't crazy about the author's style of writing although the characters were compelling.
I read this many years ago and enjoyed it. Reading it now made me wonder what I saw in it the first time around. It is very dated, the characters are pretty flat, and the plot isn't that interesting
This book was a real pioneer in the genre of espionage thrillers. It's smart, fast-paced, and just a great introduction to the character of Saul, The character the even today I believe would make a great hero for the big screen. David Morrell has done an interesting thing in the way it's in pairs then a violence with secret religious orders. There is a strong sense of grace in this book for even men that have committed unforgivable crimes. It's deeper than your average action story, giving you a lot to chew on beyond the story itself.
David Morrell has been writing exceptional thrillers for decades, and The Brotherhood of the Rose is no exception. This was one of my first Morrell titles, and was the one that got me hooked on his books. Raumulas and Remus are expertly defined characters with a great back story. Like many Morrell novels, the book starts mid-way into the story, and then catches you up on the background of the characters with flashbacks. This lets the suspense and action start quickly, while still filling in key background as you need it. And, like many of his novels, there is a nice surprise waiting for you about 2/3 of the way in. Just as you think you've figured out what's going on, you discover you had no idea! This surprise is followed by a last minute twist. Not quite as good as The Fifth Profession, but a very close 2nd place for David Morrell.
I have yet to come a cross a Morrell book that isn't well written and thought out. This book simply follows in some of his great works. It does slow down a couple of times during the story, but that's generally through retrospectives to provide more context for the reveals that come later. It is set in the 1980's, which provides a chance for some of us to reminisce about to good ol' Reagan years...
